Bié University project accomplishments to date
Consulted with Experts and Stakeholders: Throughout 2006 and early 2007, SHARE consulted with professors from Northwestern University, the Kellogg School of Management, Government of Angola officials, Chevron Corporation, and Rotary International about the University Project. Many of these individuals have agreed to sit on the University Board of Trustees.
Conducted Feasibility Study: At the request of SHARE, a team from the Kellogg School of Management conducted a study in September 2006 on the feasibility of the University Project. The team highly recommended that SHARE invest its efforts to carry out the University Project.
Developed an Overall Vision and Preliminary Goal and Set of Objectives for the University Project: (Refer to activities for a detailed outline.)
Received Angolan Government Support: On January 24, 2007, Guerra Freitas led a delegation to Washington D.C. to meet with Angola’s Ambassador, Josefina Pitra Diakité, to discuss the University Project. The delegation included a Chicago graduate, the Kellogg School of Management Study Group team leader, a representative of University Church and a member of the Institute of Multi-Track Diplomacy. During the meeting, Ambassador Diakité enthusiastically endorsed the University Project and accepted SHARE’s invitation to join the University’s Board of Trustees.
Acquired Land for the University Site: the Government of Bié province has already designated a plot of land where the University will be built. The June 2007 Delegation to Angola will visit this future site of the University.
Establishing Formal Partnerships: Currently, SHARE is in the process of establishing formal partnerships with the Africa University, University of Peace, Northwestern University, and Africare in order to ensure the new University incorporates the best methods of successful educational institutions.
Organized June 2-12, 2007 Delegation to Angola: In June 2007, a delegation of eight leaders will be visiting Angola to discuss the University Project with Angola’s Minister of Education, the General Secretary of Higher Education, the Chevron Corporation Community Funding staff, the Luanda Rotary Club of Business and Community Leaders, the Governor of Bié Province, the American Ambassador to Angola, and USAID staff. These meetings will allow us to tailor the University plan to the needs and unique situation in Angola’s Bié Province.
Explored Funding for University: To ensure the success of the University’s construction and sustainability, SHARE is seeking funding from local and international foundations, trusts, corporations, and individuals. SHARE will forge strategic partnerships with a number of public and private corporations and other stakeholders in Angola and beyond the Angolan boarders in order to maximize its income generation capability.
